Edited by SIDEWALKS’ Rebeca Zuniga, a look at Maker Faire, a 2-day tech/creative festival, held in San Mateo, CA.
MAKER FAIRE 2015
Founded in 2005, the Maker Faire, an expansion of Maker magazine, has been around for ten years. The 2015 event showcased hosted 1,200 makers with over 130,000 attendees, which exceeded the organizers’ expectations. The mission of the annual event is to celebrate the spirit of innovation, creativity, learning, co-creation and family-friendly fun activities through presentations, workshops, music and artistic performances, exhibits, and more.
While you will see pavilions featuring high-tech companies such as Google, Intel, Autodesk, etc., one of the characteristics of Maker Faire is that most of the activities and presentations are ran by local makers, where they have the opportunity to showcase their creations in many fields and disciplines. From technology to food, from architecture and arts to DYI, local artists, sculptors, designers have the chance to sell and promote, fund through crowdfunding platforms, and sell their pieces of art and products. Attendees’ interaction is very important for the developing of the event, where you can see people interacting with the creations or kids pedaling bicycles to provide power energy to the stage, etc.
Dale Dougherty, founder of Maker Faire, explained that the goal of this event is to gather makers and create the environment where families join in and have fun. Nowadays, Maker Faire has grown and expanded to many countries around the world. Dougherty has a unique vision of what a maker is: “We all are makers, because we have the ability to create things.”
