HOLY SUPERHEROES! The SIDEWALKS team takes a look at the creative costumes at the Big WOW! ComicFest event.
SIDEWALKS photographer J.P. Langston, executive producer / co-host Richard R. Lee, and the production crew from KCTH-TV of Chabot College (led by station manager Sujoy Sarkar) attended the Big WOW! ComicFest on Saturday, May 18, 2013.
Held annually in San Jose, California at the San Jose Convention Center, the event is becoming a rising comic / art event that exhibits comic book, art, cosplay, anime / manga, sci-fi, fantasy, gaming and collectibles.
The two-day convention is a showcase for top artists, illustrators, and/or publishers, such as Neal Adams (Superman, Batman), Tony Daniel (Batman), Adam Hughes (Fables, Wonder Woman), Writer Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets, Joker), Toshio Maeda (Urotsukidoji & La Blue Girl), Eduardo Risson (100 Bullets), Lee Bermejo (Rorschach, Joker), Sanjulian (Vampirella), Brian Stelfreeze (Batman), Sergio Aragones (MAD, Groo), Herb Trimpe (Hulk), Terry & Rachel Dodson (X-Men, Wonder Woman), Arthur Adams (Classic Avengers), Travis Charest (Weapons of the Metabarons), Kevin Nowlan (Superman Vs. Aliens), James O’Barr (Crow), Dan Brereton (Nocturnals), Keu Cha (Rising Stars), Tim Bradstreet (The Punisher), Joe Linsner (Dawn), Michael Golden (The ‘Nam), Bill Morrison (The Simpsons, Futurama), Humberto Ramos (Wolverine), Frank Cho (Savage Wolverine, Liberty Meadows), Liam Sharp (Gears of War), Bill Sienkiewicz (Elektra Assassin), Jason Palmer (Serenity), Aaron Lopresti (Spider-Man), and Ryan Sook (Zatanna).
Stan Lee, the founder and first Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, was the 2013’s main guest at Big WOW!
Of course, one of the main highlights is the attendees dressing up in costumes from their favorite comic or movies.
A man who portrayed “Thor” (pictured, right) won the night’s costume event (there were two “Thor” entries), with over 40 other contestants dressed as “Batman,” “The Joker,” kids as “Supergirl” and “Spiderman’s” enemy “Doctor Octopus,” or characters from “X-Men,” “Iron Man,” “Superman,” “Alien,” “Sailor Moon,” and “Planet of The Apes,” among others. Cash and free tickets to next year’s Big WOW! were the prizes.
Langston and Lee took photographs throughout the event, as well as during the costume contest. Visit our Facebook page to see photos of the creative costumes from Big WOW!
