SIDEWALKS host Sonia Lowe talks to members of Pentatonix about performing cover tunes, touring around the world, their most difficult arrangement, and the latest release, “PTX Presents: Top Pop, Vol. I.”
Mini-Biography:
Pentatonix is an a cappella group with current vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola and Matt Sallee. Original members Hoying, Maldonado, Grassi grew up together in Arlington, Texas, while Olusola joined them the day before auditions of NBC’s “The Sing-Off” and Sallee came on board in 2017 after another member, Avi Kaplan, left the group. Pentatonix won the third season of “The Sing-Off,” but became bigger stars with their YouTube channel that has over 13 million subscribers and 2.7 billion views. In 2012, the group released their debut EP, “PTX, Volume 1.” Other albums include “PTX, Vol. II,” and “PTX, Vol. III,” “PTX, Vol. IV – Classics,” and “PTX Presents: Top Pop, Vol. I,” Additionally, two full-length studio compilation albums, “PTX, Vols. 1 & 2,” were released in Japan, Korea and Australia. “PTXmas,” That’s Christmas to Me,” and “A Pentatonix Christmas” are the tiles of their Christmas albums. An eponymous album of mostly of original material was released in 2015. So far, Pentatonix have won three Grammy Awards, a Streamy Award, YouTube Music Award, and Shorty Award, among many nominations.
