Mini-Biography:
Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, Padma Lakshmi is an internationally-known food expert, model, actress and author. She is best known as the host and judge of Bravo’s “Top Chef” since season two. Originally known as the first internationally successful Indian supermodel, Lakshmi started modeling while an exchange student in Spain with Clark University. Lakshmi established herself as a food expert early on in her career. She hosted two cooking shows and writing a best-selling cookbook “Easy Exotic,” for which she won the International Versailles Event for best cookbook by a first time writer. She followed that with her second cookbook, “Tangy, Tart, Hot & Sweet.” Other titles are: “Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir” and “The Encyclopedia of Spices and Herbs: An Essential Guide to the Flavors of the World.” As a writer, Lakshmi has contributed to such magazines as “American Vogue,” “Gourmet,” and British and American “Harper’s Bazaar.” As an actress, Lakshmi appeared in a variety of TV and movie roles: as Sylk in “Glitter” with Mariah Carey; as Shiela Bardez in “Boom”; as Geeta in “The Mistress of Spices,” as alien princess Kaitaama in an episode of “Star Trek: Enterprise”; as Madhuvanthi in an episode of “Sharpe”; as Princess Bithia in the TV miniseries “The Ten Commandments.” She also appeared as herself in “30 Rock.”
