Both recorded at Silicon Valley Comic Con, SIDEWALKS host Richard R. Lee interviews actress Nichelle Nichols about the “Star Trek” phenomenon and her earlier career as a singer and dancer. Then in 2018, Richard got an unexpected second opportunity to interview Ms. Nichols about acting and whether she would have loved playing Uhura again if “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country” wasn’t the last movie for the original cast. Plus, a surprised cameo from Mae Jemison, a former NASA astronaut and the first African American woman to travel in space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Mini-Biography:

Born in Robbins, Illinois, Nichelle Nichols is an actress, singer and dancer. She is best known as communications officer Lieutenant Uhura on the original “Star Trek” series and feature films, as well as online version “Star Trek: Of Gods and Men.” Before acting, she sang and toured with Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton and their bands. Other acting roles include “Made in Paris ,” “Mister Buddwing,” “Snow Dogs,” “Are We There Yet?,” “Lady Magdalene’s,” and “Tru Loved.” Nichols also did voice roles in animated series “Futurama,” “Gargoyles,” “Batman: The Animated Series,” and “Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster.” She volunteered with NASA to recruit female and minority personnel. Nichelle Nichols passed away on July 30, 2022 at the young age of 89.
