Interview: John Stanley

In the San Francisco Bay Area, he is known as the host of the classic “Creature Features” on KTVU. Meet John Stanley, the man who knows horror films, as well as the writer who has interviewed “The Funniest Comedy Icons of the 20th Century.”

Lee interviews writer and former “Creature Features” host, John Stanley, about his career; his love of horror films; working on the local San Francisco Bay Area horror-themed movie TV show; and his new book with vintage celebrity interviews, “The Funniest Comedy Icons of the 20th Century.”

Mini-Biography:
Best known for the being the second host of “Creature Features,” a local KTVU-TV horror movie series, John Stanley is a writer, a horror film expert, and television personality. He worked as an entertainment writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, before becoming famous for his first TV gig. He wrote “I Was a TV Horror Host,” “The Gang That Shot Up Hollywood” (with profiles of Clint Eastwood, Robert Mitchum, Samuel Fuller, Karl Malden, James Stewart, Ida Lupino, Barbara Stanwyck, Carroll Baker, and many others) and novels “World War III” (aka “Napalm Sunday”) and “Bogart ’48.” Additionally, Stanley wrote six editions of “The Creature Features Movie Guide.” He also has produced several DVDs featuring material from his “Creature Features” shows, as well as a documentary about film noir expert Eddie Muller. His latest book is the two-volume set, “The Funniest Comedy Icons of the 20th Century,” with interviews of Hollywood elites like Sid Caesar, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, George Burns, Lucille Ball, Art Carney, Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers, Mae West, Liberace, Tom Hanks, Carol Burnett, James Coco, Mary Tyler Moore, Phyllis Diller, Bob Newhart, Barbara Eden and many others.
