In this edited version of our 2008 interview with SIDEWALKS host Cindy Rhodes, Alfonso talked about his early career, what he enjoyed doing the most when it comes to singing, dancing or acting, and how he felt about his “Fresh Prince” days and working with Will Smith.
Mini-Biography:
Born in New York, Alfonso Ribeiro is a singer, gymnast and professional tap dancer. He is best known as Carlton Banks in the hit TV series, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Ribeiro made his acting debut at age eight on the PBS series, “Oye Ollie.” He later received critical acclaim for his starring performance in the Tony Award®-winning Broadway hit “The Tap Dance Kid,” as well as recorded several dance / pop singles for Island Records. He gained worldwide exposure alongside Michael Jackson during the performer’s celebrated Pepsi commercial in the early ‘80s. In 1984, Alfonso landed the role of Ricky Schroder’s sidekick and best friend on the sitcom, “Silver Spoons.” He also co-starred in LL Cool J’s series, “In the House.” He hosted “Your Big Break” and competed and won on the Fox reality / competition show, “Celebrity Duets.” Besides appearing in front to the camera, he has directed episodes of “One on One” and “All of Us.” In his leisure time, he enjoys a number of activities and can regularly be seen golfing on the celebrity players tour. An avid racing professional, Alfonso drove part-time in the ‘90s, winning the Toyota Grand Prix Pro/Celebrity Race in 1994 and 1995 and finishing 3rd at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the Star Mazda Series. Ribeiro won season nineteen of “Dancing with the Stars” and the latest host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”
