Lynyrd Skynyrd band members Johnny Van Zant, Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke talk to SIDEWALKS host Cindy Rhodes about the band’s longevity and their latest album, “Last of a Dyin’ Breed.” The members also discuss what they do on their off time.
Formed in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, Lynyrd Skynyrd is a legendary rock band with a catalog of over 60 albums and sales beyond 30 million worldwide. Their hot song, “Sweet Home Alabama,” has over two million downloaded ringtones.
The current members are: Johnny Van Zant (lead vocals, 1987-present), Gary Rossington (guitars, 1964-1977, 1987-present), Rickey Medlocke (drums, guitars, backing vocals, 1970-1971, 1996-present), Mark Matejka (guitars, backing vocals, 2006-present), Robert Kearns (bass, backing vocals, 2009-present), Michael Cartellone (drums, 1999-present), and Peter Keys (keyboards, 2009-present). Their touring members are Dale Krantz-Rossington (backing vocals, 1987-present) and Carol Chase (backing vocals, 1987-present).
The group disbanded following a 1977 tragedy that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, in a plane crash. Since then, the band also lost Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson,
In 1987, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for a reunion tour and continues to tour & record today. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
