SIDEWALKS host Veronica Castro interviews Marlee Matlin and Emilia Jones, two of the cast members of the Apple TV+ original film, “CODA.” Along with Matlin’s interpreter is Jack Jason, they talk about the film, where Jones played a hearing teenage girl Ruby Rossi, who is a child of deaf adults (CODA for short), and Matlin as her mother, Jackie Rossi. Additionally, in the middle of the interview, a Zoom clip is shown with the cast members (including Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant) finding out that were nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Awards: Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
Mini-Biographies:
Born in Morton Grove, Illinois, Marlee Matlin won the Academy Award® for Best Actress for playing Sarah Norman in “Children of a Lesser God” (1986). She became the only deaf performer to have won an Oscar®, as well as the youngest winner in the Best Actress category. While she continued in movies with such titles as “Walker,” “The Linguini Incident,” “The Player Hear,” “What the Bleep Do We Know!?,” “No Evil,” “It’s My Party,” and “Some Kind of Beautiful,” TV has been really good for her. Matlin starred in NBC’s “Reasonable Doubts” (1991–1993) with co-star Mark Harmon. Matlin also appeared in a number of popular shows, such as playing Mayor Laurie Bey in “Picket Fences,” Joey Lucas in “The West Wing,” Ruby Whitlow in “My Name Is Earl,” Jodi Lerner in “The L Word,” Jocelyn Turner in “Quantico,” and Melody Bledsoe in “Switched at Birth.” Additionally, she guest-starred in “Seinfeld,” “The Practice,” “ER,” “Code Black,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” On reality show, she was in “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Celebrity Apprentice.” As an author, she wrote “Deaf Child Crossing,” “Leading Ladies,” “Nobody’s Perfect,” and autobiography “I’ll Scream Later.” Matlin is a prominent member of the National Association of the Deaf.
Born in Westminster, London, England, Emilia Jones is an actress and singer. She currently plays Kinsey Locke in Netflix’s “Locke & Key,” as well as having recurring roles in “House of Anubis” and “Utopia.” Early in her acting career, she guest-starred in “Doctor Who,” “Residue” and “Wolf Hall.” In films, Jones starred in “Brimstone,” “Ghostland,” and “Horrible Histories.” She also performed in theatrical productions “Shrek The Musical,” “Turn of the Screw,” and “Far Away.”
