The award-winning director (“House of Flying Daggers,” “Hero,” and ”Raise the Red Lantern”) comes to SIDEWALKS to talk about his historical war film, “The Flowers of War.”
Video Content: Zhang Yimou (2011): In a special interview, SIDEWALKS host Maaika Westen talks to the director of “The Flowers of War,” a 2011 Chinese historical drama war film starring Christian Bale and introducing actress Ni Ni.
Born in China in 1950, Zhang Yimou is a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, a member China’s Fifth Generation Filmmakers (the first group to graduate following the Cultural Revolution), and has established himself as one of the influential directors today.
He made his directorial debut in 1987 with “Red Sorghum,” which became China’s first film to be nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film. In addition to acting in “Red Sorghum” and “Old Well,” Yimou is a cinematographer, with credits including “Yellow Earth,” “Old Well,” and “The Big Parade.”
