Mini-Biography:
Born in New York, Harry Belafonte is known to the world as a singer, actor, songwriter, and social activist. Branded as the “King of Calypso” for his Caribbean musical style with his hit album, “Calypso” (1956), Mr. Belafonte found his signature lyric “Day-O” with the single, “The Banana Boat Song.” Additionally, the album made him the first artist in industry history to sell over a million LPs. Mr. Belafonte has many honors in his career, including earning a Tony Award in his first Broadway appearance, “John Murray Anderson’s Almanac”; winning an Emmy® for his network production of “An Evening with Belafonte”; and garnering two Oscar® nominations and winning the Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) for “Carmen Jones.” Throughout his career he has been an advocate for civil rights and humanitarian causes.
