SIDEWALKS host Cindy Rhodes talks to the Run-D.M.C. performer about the group’s legacy, as well as his involvement with Novo Nordisk and its national education program, “Ask.Screen.Know.,” which urges Americans aged 45 or older to learn about type 2 diabetes risk factors and the awareness for early screening.
Mini-Biography:
Born in Hollis, Queens, New York, Joseph Simmons, better known with stage names as Rev. Run, DJ Run or Reverend Run, is a founding member of the legendary hip-hop group, Run–D.M.C., who were named as “The Greatest Hip Hop Group of All Time” by MTV.com and “Greatest Hip Hop Artist of All Time” by VH1. He was the lead vocalist, along with Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels and the late DJ Jason “Jam-Master Jay” Mizell. Together, they sold over tens of millions of records worldwide, with hit singles such as “Walk This Way,” “It’s Like That,” “Hard Times,” “My Adidas,” “Run’s House,” “What’s It All About,” and many others. In 2009, the group was an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On TV, Simmons and his family appeared on the popular MTV reality series, “Run’s House,” from 2005-2009. His other series are “Rev Run’s Renovation” (airing on DIY Network and HGTV) and “Rev Run’s Sunday Suppers” (Cooking Channel). Simmons is also a practicing minister.
