Does Charlie have good luck with Women? | by Justin Langston

Stand-up comedian Dane Cook and former Dark Angel Jessica Alba are teamed in GOOD LUCK CHUCK, a new romantic comedy from Lionsgate.

Follow up:

Charlie is the luckiest man in town... or is he? Well, you see...the thing is...he's a lucky charm for women. It all started when Charlie Logan (Cook) was 10 years old, where he played spin-the-bottle with a bunch of his schoolmates. The winner was the scary and gothic appearing young girl (Sasha Pieterse), who Charlie refused to make out with. Because of this rejection, she put a curse on him … a curse that will not bring true love to Charlie.

Now jump forward 25 years later, Charlie, a successful dentist, still can’t find the woman of his dreams. When Charlie attends his ex-girlfriend’s wedding, he discovers that every woman he’s ever slept with have found true love – with the next guy after him. At the wedding, he meets Cam (Alba) a clumsy, but beautiful woman who works at a penguin habitat. Love at first sight, Charlie attempts to gain her trust and affections, but he fears to sleep with her because the curse may rub off on Cam and drives her away.

I'd like to warn everyone ahead time who wants to see this movie; it's not for the faint of heart. It's sexually explicit and the dialogue is extremely vulgar. If you like looking at topless women, watching soft porn-like situations, hearing raunchy language and learning what you can do with grapefruit, then this is your movie.

A high point in the film is the chemistry between stars Jessica Alba and Dane Cook. Because of Cook's run on the stand-up comedy circuit, his comedic prowess is sharp. He delivers his lines with precision timing; his expressions and slapstick acting are priceless. Alba actually works well off of her co-star and seems to be a natural comedian. She plays Cam with ease, as she pulls off some of the most physical stunts. Alba is not afraid to take a fall or run into a pole, and because of that, the humor flowed freely from her. Her dressed down, plain Jane look in this film makes her just as attractive as if she were all dressed up. Dan Fogler is better suited for the role of Stu, the plastic surgeon and Charlie's best friend. Fogler's character is nothing like the wanna be Jack Black character he plays in the recent "Balls Of Fury.” His character is much more of a sexist pig, who fondles women and treats them like complete sex objects. The actors kept things simple and light as the script called for, without becoming too sappy or gushy.

Aside from the super raunchy silliness and sexual exploits, there are moments of romantic bubbles: Charlie is trying to win the affections of Cam by asking her out, Charlie helping out his receptionist (Ellia English), or helping Cam jump start her car.

To me, "Good Luck Chuck" is one of few really funny romantic comedies you'll see this year that actually lives up to both the romance and comedy.
