The TV show, Reno 911, debuted on Comedy Central in 2003 and it proved to be a huge success (the show has entered it's third season). With the debut movie version of "Reno 911: Miami,” the TV show is taken to the gutter and back. I guarantee it's one of the dorkiest and lowbrow comedies of the year. Remember raunchy fest comedies like "Police Academy," "National Lampoon's Animal House" and "Clerks 1 and 2"? Now combine those movies with slap-shtick comedies and someone shooting home videos of them documentary style…the result is "Reno 911: Miami".
Follow up:
As with the TV show, the movie involves the same characters from the Reno Police Dept. (not the real Reno peace officers, of course) The film takes them out of the Nevada setting and to South Florida where they attend the National Police Convention. The officers of the Reno Police Force are called to duty, when the entire Miami-Dade Police squad is put under quarantine after a mysterious disease renders them deathly ill. Now it's up to the Reno P.D. to keep Miami safe from harm.
The film showcases the actors from the TV series: Thomas Lennon (Viva Variety, The State) as Lt. Jim Dangle, Carlos Alazraqui (also known as the voice of the Taco Bell’s Chihuahua dog) as Officer James Garcia, Mary Birdsong as Deputy Cherisha Kimball, Robert Ben Garant (who also directs the film) as Deputy Travis Junior, Kerri Kenny-Silver (upcoming “Balls Of Fury”) as Deputy Trudy Wiegel, Wendi Mclendon-Covey (co-writer the upcoming “Cook-Off”) as Deputy Clementine Johnson, Niecy Nash (“Guess Who,” “Cook-Off”) as Raineesha Williams, and Cedric Yarbrough (the upcoming “Closing Escrow,” “Cook-Off”) as Deputy S. Jones. Along with the main cast, the film also sprinkled in are some cameo appearances by Danny Devito (who co-produces “Reno 911: Miami”) and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (“Scorpion King,” “The Rundown,” “Doom”).
Considering the fact these comedic actors worked well together on the Reno 911 TV series, they were able to bring their skills to the table and make the audience roar with laughter through ad-libbing and spouting out off the cuff statements.
"Reno 911: Miami" is a pretty simple movie to watch, there's not much to the plot, and the comedy is lowbrow. In fact it's the type of movie where as, if you haven't seen the television series, you can understand what's happening. It's pretty ridiculous and there are some moments of sheer gut busting laughter.
"Reno 911: Miami" is a comedy that pulls out all the stops, so if you come to watch a clever, well scripted comedy you will be disappointed. However if you want a good weekend gut buster that doesn't require a lot of brainpower to watch, then "Reno 911:Miami" is the comedy for you.
