In the beginning there was the newjack era, spanning from the late 80's-1998. And towards the end of the newjack age (1996-1998) artists such as Tamia, Mya, TLC, Brandy, Monica and Terry Dexter were dominating the teen R&B queen scene. But after Terry Dexter's debut album, she seemed to have faded from existence. That was not the case at all, and, in fact, she has been quietly working under the radar.
Follow up:
In 2001 she worked with Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas on his solo effort "Lost Change". She wrote the single from that album "Lay Me Down" on which she sung the vocals in an Aalyah like way. In between times, Terry has managed to lend her voice and music to soundtracks for films like "Bait," "Rush Hour," and "Legally Blonde." Dexter even made an appearance in the movie "Deliver Us From Eva" and performed on stage.
Terry Dexter teamed up with some of the hottest male singers and producers around. She has sung with Eric Benet for one of the most acclaimed single around, "Spend My Life with You," the remixed version (the original was done with Tamia, which was also highly acclaimed). Terry continued on the road to success, when she sung with Jaheim on his solo album, "Getto Love.” To add to her co-writing credits, she had the pleasure of working with her mentor, Patti La Belle. Terry did some vocal arrangements for Patti's "Classic Moments". Terry Dexter even sung background vocals for a gospel album for by Patti LaBelle. Her most recent work was for the victims of Hurricane Katrina where she worked along side Michael McDonald, Eric Benet, Wynonna Judd and more for the album "Hurricane Relief: Come Together Now"
Now after 8 years, Terry Dexter is making her way back to the spotlight with a new solo album. In 1999, she released her self titled debut "Terry Dexter." Similar to what Tamia released, Terry sounds like Tamia in her approach to song writing and sound. The album was even produced by the same label as her counterpart, Warner Bros. Coming from Detroit, Michigan where the "Motown Sound" was born, Terry's new album is said be inspired by that influence. No word yet on the title of the album nor a release date.
