Like Steven King and Phillip K. Dick, M. Knight Shyamalan weaves his most awesome and eerie film since "Signs" and "The Village". His latest thriller, "Lady In The Water," plays like a bedtime story that was ripped right from the pages of a story book.
Follow up:
The cast provide impressive performances. Paul Giamatti ("Sideways") plays Cleveland Heep, an ordinary apartment building manager, who discovers that there is a "Lady" living in the complex pool. Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Village"), the lady herself, gives an intriguing and spot-on performance as the mythical creature called a "Narf" who is being hunted by something evil. They are supported by a great cast, which includes Freddy Rodriguez, Sorita Choudhury, Jeffrey Wright, and even the writer/director himself. Shyamalan gave himself a significant roll this time around as neighbor Vick Ran (he usually makes cameo appearances in his previous films).
The 110-minute movie initially begins like an old indian wise tale, and from there the suspense begins to build. But don't let the slow pace fool you, the perfectly timed gotcha moments is enough to toss audiences out of their seats and keep the blood pumping viciously through your veins. As the movie trains on the main character, Giamatti employs the help of the entire apartment complex, in a race against time and all odds to return the "Lady In The Water" to her rightful home.
M. Knight Shyamalan creates a make believe world, but, at the same time, makes it real. Although it takes some patience to watch as the story develops, the ending will leave an impact that will haunt your dreams.
We here at Sidewalks recommends the film.
